The Pirate Bay trial: guilty verdict
Swedish court sentences four co-founders of notorious download site The Pirate Bay to a year in jail and a $3.6m fine
guardian.co.uk, Friday 17 April 2009 10.25 BST
The four co-founders of website The Pirate Bay have been found guilty of assisting the distribution of illegal content online by a Swedish court today and have been sentenced to a year in jail and a $3.6m (£2.4m) fine.
A Stockholm court found the four defendants guilty of making 33 specific files accessible for illegal sharing through The Pirate Bay, which means they will have to pay compensation to 17 different music and media companies including Sony BMG, Universal, EMI, Warner, MGM and 20th Century Fox.
The Pirate Bay does not itself host audio and video files, but provides links to torrents hosted elsewhere on the internet.
Supporters of The Pirate Bay held a street party in Moscow last night, with organisers saying the trial had proved that the companies behind the prosecution were "motivated only by their greed and inertia, want to prevent people sharing music, movies, or anything, on a purely altruistic basis".
The chairman of the Swedish Independent Music Producers Association, Jonas Sjöström, said as the trial concluded that the consortium is "tired and sick of services like The Pirate Bay who have no understanding or respect for the creative community, and instead have their own financial interests at heart".

E cadeia?!

Aqui transcrevo alguns:
"Oh dear
Shame they aint bankers, they would have recieved a fat pension"
"Google does not itself host audio and video files, but provides links to torrents hosted elsewhere on the internet"
"No "Art" had not been defended at all
Buisness and the monopoly of reproduction has been defended, leave it in the hands of the corporates, less choice - more profits.
As if the record companys give a stuff about art or artists!!
Lol"
"The greed merchants might have won the battle, but we, the ripped-off and insulted, will eventually win the war."
"I don't see why prison is part of the punishment. It's not like they're violent. Shit, if they were being clever about it they'd employ them, not sue them."

"That's a pity! It's not a good decision for Art, nor for struggling musicians. It just means poor people will have less access to music and film etc. The arguments against file sharing are the same as the ones used against home taping years ago, a load of rubbish. People who are wealthy enough to buy proper cds and dvds don't normally faff around with tedious torrent downloads. Half of the torrents I download are by artists who died long ago, so who exactly am I ripping off?"

Whart you have posted is complete and utter nonsense. It isn't about the musicians, it never has been about the musicians. It's about the corporate suits who are no longer required in a digital age. It's about the PR men who are no longer needed due to the advancements in social networking. It's about how media companies vastly inflate the true cost of their product to line their own pockets.
Most of the musicians get a pittance for what they do, it is only the very top tier musicians - and actors & directors for that matter too - who actually make any real money out of their work, the rest are often duped by the media companies into accepting far lower amounts of money while the money they earn the companies is poured into the troughs for the pigs to gourge on.
Most people, when asked would gladly pay a nominal monthly fee to be able to have access to a wide range of media sources with no DRM and with the freedom to do with it what we wish.
You may argue that this wouldn't provide enough money to the creators of the music/filmThe artists themselves would certainly see a much fairer return if all the people creaming vast amounts off the top were removed from the equation. The music and film industry execs know this, which is why they are so determined to stop it. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas."
